Matthew Smith // Ethos & Pathos

by Lorin Drexler · May 31, 2018

Matthew Smith – Featured Artist

I’d like to thank Matthew Smith for his spiritually motivated collective and permission for inclusion in this month’s journal. To learn more about Matthew, check out his biography below and visit his links.

Like Matthew, I am drawn to a more spiritual way of life, for what that may mean in a day and age as this. I think it’s presumed anyone tromping such a path outside, or bordering, sects of established religion are seen as part of some kind of expendable new age. When in the context of what we actually know, between our cycles of birth and death, and within the pervasiveness of those we find to understand the context of life fully, as the pinnacle in the broad spectrum of multisensory evolution, I’d hope we can agree that we are less human than we are something far more interchangeable. As our true essence was not born from human metaphysicality, and will not be excavated as such—and as we, in this philistine era, contently deprived of knowledge and practice of root self-awareness, will continue to find this world of ours falling deeper into darkness and madness, and thus, in a very reflective period, there will be a new age. One we can no longer ignore abating the seed of our true existence and form. One where we will realize what is of utmost importance and base our lives on those principles as opposed to infatuating megalomaniacal dreams, gulping down, in excess, amulets of indulgence while affirming the gourmands of grandeur by applause, perpetuating egocentrism. We will find ourselves in an age where living things are more a concern than unattainable appetites that hold just as little importance from the inception of their desire to the moment they are attained. One where our lives are supported by principles of kindness and love, and all other interrogative inquisitions prepositioning our daily lives are seen as what they are—game and madness. Maybe one day… maybe one day… just not today.

Ethos & Pathos

It comes in waves, and each of those waves presents layers and complexities and hardships and changes… and, well, a moment to decide what it is we want from Itand why it is we do. In my most reasonable moments, I assume the prophets were the most evolved and held the greatest formulations of life—that one must move along the energy field with absolutely no resistance, like gravity, and no attachment to any one thing, even death. Though that path of no resistance is set in the stars for more to embellish and fewer to live. And though, coming to the realization, beside the path of least resistance, proves only the road to suffering, and a vast trudge for cattle bogged in the machine, skimming for glimpses of purity and joy. The road everyone you see has chosen and has had chosen for them. The road I’ve been feeding with breadcrumbs that I’ve accidentally ingested, in infinity patterns, where I continue bumping heads with myself at every intersecting crossroad. The same road growing faint as a lost star in a burning galaxy, screaming to its God to make its envious moth the next butterfly sun. Though this road, for each and every, as the brilliant glow in the humming distance will tell you, always points home.

No matter the path,
or the understanding.
No matter the truth and nearness of telling.
No matter what you think matters—and does not…
We will all meet again in one beautifully brilliant, scientifically spiritual thing. It is there that,
No matter where you find your way, it will be filled.
