with Scissors
the universe is red
like the heart
we drum that
tears and wrings
from the cloth;
purple at the vein
carving at the oculus,
discarding scraps
through perpetual movement…
our children wander
through the halls
lost yet constantly
pulled
i have no children
i have not, i am
yet by void
yet absolute
we are carving at
the same doily
attached at the hip
creating and recreating—
the sun eradicating
what we know about
each other and the light
that shadows everything
it is all perception
we are eyeless rays
the universe is red
like crimson or cherry or currant
round and pregnant
dripping in panting orgasm
like a swollen
night
frowning at the
privation of ecstasy
as we move closer
toward the center
we grow older
thinner
weaker—
we are dying
a wooden chair sits in the
corner of the room, thorning—
unaccompanied
and perfect
in this moment
we find life
as it whispers
its concluding
reformation

Dani Godreau is a feminist artist best known for exploring women’s traditional crafts and domestic duties through paper cutting. Her work stretches the definition of drawing by creating line and form through incisions and shadow while paying homage to the global tradition of paper cutting as an art form and valorizing devalued women’s labor. She graduated from Florida State University with a BFA in Painting and BA in Art History in 2012, going on to receive her MFA in Drawing/Painting from Arizona State University in 2016. In 2015 and 2016, Godreau was awarded funding from The Nathan Cumming’s Travel Grant and Shangyuan Artist Residency to facilitate her research in Beijing and Foshan regarding Chinese folk art and traditional paper cutting. She resides in Phoenix, AZ, while teaching at ASU and within the Tempe School District’s Visiting Studio Artist Program.
